- DESCRIPTION
-
- The Quick Envelope Printer program provides the ability to
- quickly (without alot of bizarre keystrokes) address
- envelopes, store the addresses, and provide a small
- editor (to write short 1 page letters) with the ability
- to merge the address information (that is saved) into the
- letters.
-
- FEATURES
-
- ' When you want to print an envelope the database is
- updated automatically (no duplicates are saved).
-
- ' Function keys give the user the ability to modify the
- database, change the printer that is being used, and
- don't forget HELP.
-
- ' Numerous supported printers including a Standard Print-
- er Type for generic printers.
-
- ' Simple to use mini-editor which gives the ability to
- merge the information stored in the database into your
- letters.
-
- OMBUDSMAN STATEMENT
-
- Annette Cuomo is a member of the Association of Shareware
- Professionals (ASP) ASP wants to make sure that the share-
- ware principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve
- a shareware-related problem with an ASP member by contacting
- the member directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP
- Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with an
- ASP member, but does not provide technical support for
- members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545
- Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe message
- via CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.

- SHAREWARE
-
- Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
- before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and con-
- tinue using it, you are expected to register. Individual
- programs differ on details -- some request registration
- while others require it, some specify a maximum trial peri-
- od. With registration, you get anything from the simple
- right to continue using the software to an updated program
- with printed manual.
-
- Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial soft-
- ware, and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a
- few specific exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors
- are accomplished programmers, just like commercial authors,
- and the programs are comparable in quality. (In both cases,
- there are good programs and bad ones!). The main difference
- is in the method of distribution. The author specifically
- grants the right to copy and distribute the software, either
- to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example, some
- authors require written permission before a commercial disk
- vendor may copy their Shareware.
-
- Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software.
- You should find software that suits your needs and pocket-
- book, whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware
- system makes fitting your needs easier, because you can try
- before you buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are
- low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee
- -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.
-
-
- DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT
-
- Users of QENV must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
- "QENV is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warran-
- ties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
- the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any
- purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages,
- direct or consequential, which may result from the use of
- QENV."
-
- Page 2
-
- DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT (cont'd)
-
- QENV is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
- to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
- friends, but please do not give it away altered or a part of
- another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is
- to provide personal computer users with quality software
- without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for pro-
- grammers to continue to develop new products. If you find
- this program useful and find that you are using QENV and
- continue to use QENV after a reasonable trial period, you
- must make a registration payment of $15 to Annette Cuomo.
- The $15 registration fee will license one copy for use on
- any one computer at any one time. You must treat this soft-
- ware just like a book. An example is that this software may
- be used by any number of people and may be freely moved from
- one computer location to another, so long as there is no
- possibility of it being used at one location while it's
- being used at another. Just as a book cannot be read by two
- different persons at the same time.
-
- Commercial users of QENV must register and pay for their
- copies of QENV within 30 days of first use or their license
- is withdrawn. Site-license arrangements may be made by
- contacting Annette Cuomo.
-
- Anyone distributing QENV for any kind of renumeration must
- first contact Annette Cuomo at the address below for author-
- ization. This authorization will be automatically granted
- to distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its
- guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors
- may begin offering QENV immediately. (However Annette Cuomo
- must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept
- up-to-date with the latest version of QENV.).
-
- You are encouraged to pass a copy of QENV along to friends
- for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their
- copy if they find that they can use it. All registered
- users will receive a copy of the latest version of QENV, and
- 90 days free technical support. I can be reached anytime,
- the old fashioned way (by mail), phone, fax, or on Compu-
- serve.

- INSTALLATION
-
- QENV stores the database information in a file called
- ENV.DAT (included on the diskette). When QENV is started
- the current directory will be searched for ENV.DAT if
- ENV.DAT is not found in the current directory, QENV will
- search the path specified in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The
- same is true for the printer setup file PRNT.SET and the
- correspondence file ENVLTR.DAT.
-
- To create a QENV directory and copy QENV into that directory
- follow these steps,
-
- 1. Place the enclosed diskette in drive A:
-
- 2. c:>MD QENV [ENTER]
-
- 3. c:>CD QENV [ENTER]
-
- 4. c:>COPY A:*.* [ENTER]
-
- If you just want one copy of the database file to be
- accessed on your hard drive, I suggest that you copy
- the file ENV.DAT into a directory specified in your path
- and delete it from where you copied the diskette (in this
- case the directory QENV).
-
- Hints: I have the program QENV copied into my directory
- \UTIL which is specified as part of my path in my AU-
- TOEXEC.BAT file, I also have the file ENV.DAT and
- PRNT.SET copied into \UTIL. This way I can run QENV from
- any directory on my machine and access the information I
- have stored in the one ENV.DAT, PRNT.SET file.

- attention to a certain individual at the specified address
- (NOTE: the word ATTENTION:" does not print
- automatically). The "Return Addr" prompt should be answered
- with a "Y" or [ENTER] for YES, meaning you want to specify

- without printing any envelopes.
-
- After the envelope is printed the new name and address are
- added to the database automatically. If the new name and
- address already exist in the file no addition is performed.

- letters created in this section are stored in a letter
- database file called ENVLTR.DAT. Like the envelope database
- file ENV.DAT, the path specified in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
- is searched for the existance of the letter database file if
- it is not found in your path or the current directory the
- file is created in the current directory.

- USING MAILMERGE
-
- The mailmerge feature is controlled by the placement of
- variables into a letter you create with the mini-editor. A
- variable is a value holder. A value is placed in a variable
- when a letter is printed, the value placed in the variable
- is determined by the variable name.
-
- All variables start and end with the character ^ (I call it
- a top-hat).
-
- The variable definitions are as follows (pressing [F2] at
- the mini-editor will display the variable definition
- list),
-
- ^DATE^ ---- Today's date
- ^MY_NAME^ ---- Return address name
- ^MY_STREET1^ ---- Return street 1 address

- HELP (cont'd)
-
- The printer and port chosen is stored in the file PRNT.SET.
- QENV searches your path for this file if it is not found
- the file is written to the current directory.
-
- NOTE: If no printer is set-up the printer type is assumed to
- be an HP-LaserJet.
-
- [F6] Is used to permanently elimate any deleted records
- from the database. When a record is deleted it is just
- flagged as such (to allow a future UNDELETE option) this
- option was added for those of us who don't want to use the
- extra disk space required to have the deleted records
- hanging around.
-
- [F7] Accesses the correspondence section of QENV this option
- provides a small editor with mailmerge capabilities to allow
- writing of letters to Names/Addresses stored in the data-
- base. NOTE: The correcspondence section creates its own
- database containing the letters that are written.
-
- [F8] Will print out all of the names/addresses stored in the
- database to the printer currently setup.

- ' Adding a Phone-Dialer.
- ' Ability to print letters/envelopes to ALL addresses
- with one operation.
- ' Ability to print multiple copies of the same envelope.
-
- GENERAL NOTES:
-
- QENV is distributed with a starter database file ENV.DAT,
- a starter printer setup file PRNT.SET, a starter configu-
- ration file QENV.CFG, the starter database file has my
- name/address in it. The starter printer setup file con-
- tains the Standard Printer as the default. In this version
- the configuration file only contains the envelope type the
- default is a #10 size (4-1/8 X 9-1/2) envelope.
-
- If you are using one of the printers listed on the print-
- er setup menu, don't forget to change your printer type
- to the correct one.
